General English III- British & American Literature
The class offers a skeletal understanding and a small sampling of English literature as it moved from medieval England to the rest of the world. The majority of readings still comprises acclaimed works of British and American origins, but texts from other times and spaces are also featured for their cultural and humanist consequence. The class is meant for students who have only recently started reading in the original. The instructor therefore takes upon himself to be neither systematic and thorough in historical coverage nor acutely discriminating as to meet some scholarly and critical purpose. The approach is rather to engage readers in the experiences of and dialogs over these works, so that a measure of associative enjoyment is always accessible, and that the enterprise of working through fictive texts in a non-native language, one that they have barely entered, may continue at least for a time after the class is over.
General English III-Advanced Writing
The class helps beginning students in English acquire a measure of expertise and comfort in written communications, and particularly the expository form. The objective is then to cultivate a capacity to write clearly and effectively, to get the point across, to deliver information in such a way as for easy reception and to persuade readers to adopt a desired perspective and position. Each session is organized around an exercise that asks for recognition and internalization of the merits of a relevant compositional technique. This class does not teach creative writing.
