By the end of the course students will be able to understand, identify and summarise, authentic reading and audio material. These essential receptive skills will be important as they progress in academic and professional fields. The students will be drawn in by interesting and topical contexts where they can focus on the materials tone, register, audience and intention.
Students will be able to produce pieces of writing for academic and professional purposes. Expose students to the basics of English writing, ensuring they have a sound foundation to build on. Students will practice summarising information, describing trends (IELTS task 1), and focus on written register and tone. Students will be given key language and skills necessary for functional writing needed in working and academic English environments.
Ian Lonergan is the Director of Studies for the English Language Department with EF Academic Partnerships at ShanghaiTech University.
Graduate from University of Limerick with a First Class Honours (1.1) degree obtained in B.A History and Politics, Ian has spent years in teaching English to non-native speakers with various levels. He excelled at teaching English grammar and vocabulary for relevant activities, ensuring appropriate behaviour of students and assessing efforts and participation of students. After 4 years of joining in EF , he started working extensively as the Director of Studies in 2 well-known university in Shanghai, which equipped him with the professional insight of leading a dynamic academic team at ShanghaiTech University.
Keenan Sass has been delivering English classes to learners of different ages and proficiency levels for the past two years with EF in Shanghai and he enjoys teaching young adult learners. Keenan enjoys being able to communicate with his learners and teaching them about worldly topics and help open them to topics pertaining to Western Culture. In turn he loves having his students open up his world to all things China related especially Chinese culture and customs. He will be teaching Oral and Written English to the undergraduates of ShanghaiTech as well as teaching General English to the Graduates. Keenan graduated from Stellenbosch University in Cape Town South Africa, where he majored in Drama and Theatre studies with a specific focus on media. He obtained his certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language the year after graduation and aims to complete his CELTA and DipTESOL within the next three to five years.
Lee Curry is a teacher who has been working within the industry for three years. First working as a Teacher at the University of Valencia.
However, his real passion lies with teaching older learners where results are more visible and exams are the focus. He also believes English teaching can take more diverse forms at this level. At Shanghai Tech he will be focusing on Elementary General English courses. He attended Cardiff University where he graduated with a degree in Politics/International Relations and Spanish Language and Literature. He also has a TEFL and he can speak English, Spanish and Italian fluently and has some conversational knowledge of Swedish.
Tumi is a South African English language teacher, who has been living in China for almost two years. His teaching experience includes adults, university students, online and offline learning. Besides his expertise in English language teaching, Tumi has a background in Business Administration. Previous professional endeavours include working in vehicle financing, and IT asset management where he focused on training & development for new staff and key client account management.
Since studying abroad, Tumi has opened his mind and heart to knew cultures and perspectives. He strives to enhance his intercultural competence while living here in China. In his spare time he find plays football, listens to live music, and educates himself on great leaders.
He is proficient in creating business development strategies, gathering and analyzing market and economic data.
Experienced in cultivating relationships and collaborating with people from various backgrounds and diverse cultures. He engages presentations and reception of top management. From 2019 he joined EF as an English tutor who taught customized English class to students with various background. With the expertise in teaching Business English and Public Speaking and he’s looking forward to starting his new semester in ShanghaiTech.
Ronel van Wyngaard
Graduated in University of South Africa Ronel had a strong interest and background in English Literature. She has worked with other EF partner universities in Lingang for the past 2 years.
She views herself as a member of the world community, and gain personal fulfillment in the knowledge that her actions can contribute positively to the lives of others. In her teaching, she views herself as delivering more than simply content. She has a desire to impart a love of learning to her students and to empower them with the cognitive and social tools that they will need to be successful as adults in the world. She believes strongly in the socialization functions of education, and take opportunities to assist students in learning how to communicate effectively with others and how to express ideas and hear ideas in an active and respectful manner.
