听说

     本课程为高级英语听说课程。本课程通过英孚教育SOLO在线学期平台融合了反转课堂学习模式。在学年伊始,学生需要完成语言熟练度测试确定最合适的级别来提高学习效率。

     在课程结束时,学生将对范围较广的沟通技巧上充满自信,包括能够讨论成功的不同定义,根据分水的原理提供建议,讨论国民责任和爱国主义,描述环境的状态并针对提高的方法提供建议,在传达负面消息时使用词汇缓和,恰当地处理冲突。

      本课程聚焦于高级语法,集中复习所有时态,包括倒装句。在发音上,聚焦于连读和句子重读。学生在每节课结束时会收到他们需要具备能力输出语言的语音实例,典型的为一段对话或简短的演讲。任课教师会带领学生进行言语解析,有控制的言语练习和自由口语练习,并定期比对课程目的和目标对学生的学习情况进行评估,最终给到反馈和错误更正。

      本课程的目标是建立学生高级听说能力,进一步提高和朋友、同学进行对话时的自信和流利度,加强对概要和具体信息的能力,巩固学生词汇、语法使用能力同时鼓励学生在课堂外自制学习。

      课程评估通过连续在线作业,正式的口语期中考试和正式的口语、听力期末考试进行。

写作

      本课程为高级综合写作课程。在课程结束时,学生将已接触正式的学术英语写作和其相关的规范,了解学术写作的风格和结构,在熟悉的情境中发展应用写作技巧。由浅入深,本课程指导学生练习学术写作基础,从构思,下笔,审阅,编辑。至课程一半时,学生将完成一篇完整议论性学术文章作业,要求有较强的逻辑论证,结构优良的大纲,语法正确的句子,包含有吸引力的有效论题的介绍,最后有影响力的结论。在后半部分课程,学生将发展他们的应用写作技巧,情境包括概括信息,写作电影评论,博客和日记,撰写电子邮件,简历和求职信。评估通过预习和复习课堂作业,期中学术写作作业和期末的写作考试进行。本课程以预备学生进行第二学期高级完全学术写作课程为目的进行设计。

Speaking & Listening

     This is the advanced level speaking and listening course, incorporating a flipped learning system through the EF SOLO online platform. At the beginning of the academic year, learners complete oral proficiency tests to be placed into the most appropriate level for learning efficiency.

      By the end of the course students will be confident in a wide range of communicative skills, including being able to discuss different definitions of success, make suggestions according to the principles of feng shui, discuss civic duty and altruism, describe the state of the environment and suggest ways to improve it, use phrases to stall when giving bad news, and deal with conflict appropriately.  

       The course incorporates an advanced level grammar focus, concentrating on reviewing all tenses including the use of inversion as well as phonological focuses on the use of connected speech and sentence stress. Learners will receive a model of the language they should produce by the end of each lesson in the form of an audio clip, typically a dialogue or short speech. They are then guided through the processes of language clarification, controlled language practice and free speaking practice by the teacher, who regularly assesses their learning against the class aims and objectives and finally provides feedback and error correction.   

      The objectives of this course are to build learner competence in speaking and listening to an upper-advanced level, to further increase fluency and accuracy when maintaining a conversation with friends and classmates, to improve the soft skills of listening for gist and listening for specific information, to hone the learner’s use of vocabulary and grammar while widening their range, and to encourage learner autonomy outside of the classroom setting. Assessment comes in the form of continuous online homework, a formal speaking midterm exam and formal speaking and listening final exams.

General Writing

      This is the advanced level general writing course. By the end of the course the learners will be introduced to formal academic writing in English and its relevant conventions, develop their understanding of academic writing style and structure, and develop practical writing skills in a number of familiar contexts. Using a ground-up approach, the course guides students through the basics of academic writing – from pre-writing, to writing, to review, to editing. By the middle of the course, learners will produce one complete piece of argumentative academic coursework, including a strong logical argument, a well-structured outline, grammatically correct sentences, an engaging introduction with an effective thesis, and finally an impactful conclusion. In the second half of the course, learners will develop their practical writing skills in contexts such as summarizing information, writing movie reviews, writing blogs and journals, writing emails, writing CVs and cover letters. Assessment comes in the form of continuous homework assignments that preview and review class content, a midterm piece of academic coursework and a final written exam. This course is designed to prepare learners to take the advanced level full academic writing course in the second semester.

  • Ian Lonergan
         Ian Lonergan has been working as an English language teacher with EF Academic Partnerships in the English language department at Shanghaitech University since September 2015. He is a highly motivated and passionate educator who strives to facilitate effective learning through an interactive student centred approach. He has experience teaching a wide range of English language courses, with particular interest and expertise in teaching academic writing and critical reading. He believes that in the pursuit of globalised higher-level education there must be an integration of language teaching and critical thinking skills to prepare students for further education and their future professional endeavours. His research interests lie within the sphere of the English academic discourse and rhetorical organization, east/west thinking patterns, and academic integrity in educational institutions. He has experience in teacher training: delivering workshops to EFAP teachers, local Chinese staff, and primary school teachers in a Ministry of Education teacher training programme at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Since entering the field of English language education He has obtained Cambridge TKT qualifications and have recently taken examinations for the Trinity Diploma. Before leaving Ireland he graduated from the University of Limerick with a first class honours BA in History, Politics, Sociology and Social studies. He has studied abroad at the University of Malta and taught in Spain before moving to China. He looks forward to continuing his symbiotic relationship with Shanghaitech as he continues to develop professionally with this innovative institution.

         Ian Lonergan自2015年9月起开始作为英孚教育学术合作英语语言部门的英语教师教课于上海科技大学。Ian是一名积极并富有热情的教育者,他一直致力于促进以学生互动为中心的教学方式。他有丰富的英语教学经历并且专精于学术写作的批判性阅读。他认为在面对日益增长的全球化高等教育的需求中,英语教师必须同时拥有英语教学和深入思考的能力,来帮助学生为他们将来的学习和工作生涯做好准备。他的研究方向为英语学术会话和组织结构、东西方思维方式差异以及教育机构中的学术诚信问题。他同时还拥有教师培训方面的丰富经历,曾经为EFAP的教师、中国的工作人员以及上海交大教育部教师培训计划的小学教师开设过讲习班。自从进入英语教学领域后,他已经先后获得剑桥英语教学能力资格证书并于近期参加了三一文凭的资格测试。在离开爱尔兰前,他以一等荣誉学士的身份毕业于利默里克大学历史、政治、社会学和社会研究专业。
