听说

      本课程为中级英语听说课程。本课程通过英孚教育SOLO在线学期平台融合了反转课堂学习模式。在学年伊始,学生需要完成语言熟练度测试确定最合适的级别来提高学习效率。

      在课程结束时,学生将对范围较广的沟通技巧上充满自信,包括讨论他们的梦想及对未来的期待,在面试中描述他们的强弱项,讨论电视观看习惯和音乐偏好,描述典型的健康问题和症状,使用渴望,追求,计划相关的新词汇,详细的描述产品。

      本课程聚焦于中级语法,集中于现在完成时,一般过去时,过去进行时。在发音上,聚焦于连读和弱元音形式。学生在每节课结束时会收到他们需要具备能力输出语言的语音实例,典型的为一段对话或简短的演讲。任课教师会带领学生进行言语解析,有控制的言语练习和自由口语练习,并定期比对课程目的和目标对学生的学习情况进行评估,最终给到反馈和错误更正。

      本课程的目标是建立学生听说能力,提高和朋友、同学进行对话的自信,加强对概要和具体信息的能力,巩固学生词汇、语法使用能力同时鼓励学生在课堂外自制学习。

      课程评估通过连续在线作业,正式的口语期中考试和正式的口语、听力期末考试进行。

写作

      本课程为中级综合写作课程。在课程结束时,学生将接触正式的学术英语写作和其相关的规范,了解学术写作的风格和结构,在熟悉的情境中发展应用写作技巧。由浅入深,本课程指导学生练习学术写作基础,从构思,下笔,审阅,编辑。至课程一半时,学生将完成一篇完整议论性学术文章作业,要求有较强的逻辑论证,结构优良的大纲,语法正确的句子,包含有吸引力的有效论题的介绍,最后有影响力的结论。在后半部分课程,学生将发展他们的应用写作技巧,情境包括概括信息,写作电影评论,博客和日记,撰写电子邮件,简历和求职信。评估通过预习和复习课堂作业,期中学术写作作业和期末的写作考试进行。本课程以预备学生进行第二学期中级完全学术写作课程为目的进行设计。

Speaking & Listening

      This is the intermediate level speaking and listening course, incorporating a flipped learning system through the EF SOLO online platform. At the beginning of the academic year, learners complete oral proficiency tests to be placed into the most appropriate level for learning efficiency. 

      By the end of the course students will be confident in a wide range of communicative skills, including being able to discuss their dreams and wishes for the future, describe their strengths and weaknesses in an interview, discuss TV watching habits and musical preferences, describe typical health problems and their symptoms, use new vocabulary related to aspirations, ambitions and plans, and describe products in detail. 

      The course incorporates an intermediate level grammar focus, concentrating on the present perfect, past simple and past continuous tenses as well as phonological focuses on the use of connected speech and weak vowel forms. Learners will receive a model of the language they should produce by the end of each lesson in the form of an audio clip, typically a dialogue or short speech. They are then guided through the processes of language clarification, controlled language practice and free speaking practice by the teacher, who regularly assesses their learning against the class aims and objectives and finally provides feedback and error correction. 

      The objectives of this course are to build learner competence in speaking and listening, to increase confidence when maintaining a conversation with friends and classmates, to improve the soft skills of listening for gist and listening for specific information, to hone the learner’s use of vocabulary and grammar while widening their range, and to encourage learner autonomy outside of the classroom setting. Assessment comes in the form of continuous online homework, a formal speaking midterm exam and formal speaking and listening final exams.

Writing

      This is the intermediate level general writing course. By the end of the course the learners will be introduced to formal academic writing in English and its relevant conventions, develop their understanding of academic writing style and structure, and develop practical writing skills in a number of familiar contexts. Using a ground-up approach, the course guides students through the basics of academic writing – from pre-writing, to writing, to review, to editing. By the middle of the course, learners will produce one complete piece of argumentative academic coursework, including a strong logical argument, a well-structured outline, grammatically correct sentences, an engaging introduction with an effective thesis, and finally an impactful conclusion. In the second half of the course, learners will develop their practical writing skills in contexts such as summarizing information, writing movie reviews, writing blogs and journals, writing emails, writing CVs and cover letters. Assessment comes in the form of continuous homework assignments that preview and review class content, a midterm piece of academic coursework and a final written exam. This course is designed to prepare learners to take the intermediate level full academic writing course in the second semester.

  • Dan Withers
         Dan Withers is the Senior Teacher of the English Language Department with EF Academic Partnerships at ShanghaiTech University. He has been teaching English to students of all age levels and proficiencies in China for over six years and he particularly enjoys teaching young adult learners at university level and helping them achieve their personal and professional language goals. Dan is highly skilled and experienced in administering proficiency tests such as IELTS and TOEFL, and enjoys coaching students to be able to score highly on these exams. His areas of focus at ShanghaiTech include teaching and coaching public speaking, creative writing, academic writing, teacher training, syllabus design, academic mentoring and encouraging learner autonomy. Dan graduated from Loughborough University in the UK, where his major was English - both language and literature, and he has gone on to acquire many high-level language teaching qualifications including the Trinity Diploma in TESOL, the Cambridge CELTA and five Cambridge TKT certifications.

         Dan Withers是上海科技大学英孚教育学术合作英语语言部门的高级教师。他致力于教授各年龄层次、各水平的英语学习者已有6年之久,并热衷于教授大学水平的青年学习者并帮助他们达到自身或专业所需的语言要求。Dan在各类资格考试(如雅思和托福)中有着丰富的教学经验,并且乐于帮助学生训练以获得高分。他在上海科技大学的主攻领域包括口语教学和训练、创作与写作、学术写作、教学训练、课程设计、学术指导以及鼓励学习者的主动性。Dan毕业于英国的拉夫堡大学,主修英语语言文学。此后,他还获得了许多高级英语教学资格证书包括TESOL三一文凭,剑桥CELTA资格以及五项剑桥英语教学能力证书。

  • Paula Marcu
         Paula Marcu graduated from the University of Bucharest, the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature in 2006 with a B. A. in Philology and received a M.A. in Hermeneutics in 2011 from the same university. In 2009, she completed a three year course in pedagogy and methodology run by the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, the Teacher Training Department of the University of Bucharest, resulting in a Certificate for the Teaching Profession. Since 2010, she is also certified as a public trainer by the EuroTraining and Education Centre and the Romanian Minister of Education. In addition, she holds multiple Teaching Knowledge Test certificates issued by the University of Cambridge in 2013 and 2014. She worked as a Business English trainer at Bell International English Center from 2007 until 2013 where she taught corporate English classes at companies’ headquarters and ran training sessions on lesson planning, the communicative approach, classroom management, evaluation and feedback for the academic department. She also taught TOEFL, IELTS and CAE preparation courses to corporate clients. She started teaching for Education First in China in 2013. She has been teaching English Speaking and Listening, Academic Writing, Public Speaking, Western Culture and IELTS classes at ShanghaiTech University, Shanghai Customs College, Shanghai University of Commerce and Shanghai University of Political Science and Law.

  • Johnny Leddy
         Johnny comes from Ireland. After graduating from Queens University with a major in Law, he received his lawyer training (Solicitor) at Nottingham Law School. His professional areas included criminal litigation, commercial litigation, business practice and employment. He has qualifications in advocacy (public speaking), drafting, interviewing and negotiation, awarded by the Law Society of England and Wales. Following this he worked for the British Government in a senior role, which combined his legal skills with marketing and communications.

         Over the years he has built up significance experience in teaching and training. Owing to a fascination with Chinese culture and history, he travelled to Beijing to live in 2013, and have worked ever since in the adult education industry. He has taught in universities, adult training centres and in the corporate sector. He has designed and lead courses on Email Writing, Creative Writing, Communications, Law, Public Speaking and Debating, Real Life, Cultural Exchange in a Business Setting, to name some. His teaching style encompasses a belief that confidence is key and he does all in his power to build his student’s belief in their abilities.

             When not working, he enjoys canoeing, camping, fishing, reading and playing traditional Irish music. He has travelled extensively around the world but all roads tend to bring him back to China.

         近年来他在教学和培训方面积累了相当的经验。由于深深受到中国文化和历史的吸引,他于2013年移居北京,并从此致力于成人教育事业。他曾授课于大学、成人教育中心和企业部门中。他亲自设计并教授电子邮件写作、创意创作、交流、法律、公共演讲和辩论、现实生活、商务环境下的文化交流等课程。他的教学方式围绕着建立学生自信展开,他坚信自信是成功的关键所在并且尽一切所能来建立学生对于自己能力的自信。

         在闲暇时,Johnny热衷于划船、野营、钓鱼、读书以及演奏传统爱尔兰音乐。尽管他已经周游世界,然而所有的经历都越发将他带回他所魂牵梦萦的中国。
